Big Transition
"Following a major reorganisation within an international waste management company of which I was a director, I found myself with teams of very talented and motivated people who did not know one another very well sitting within an environment where what we were doing was different to the main business of the company and arguably not well understood. I needed to bring what was effectively disparate groups of people into a team with common objectives, an understanding of one another and trust between one colleague and another.
I turned to John Eaton for mentoring assistance. John spent time with me to understand the background and what I wanted to achieve. He then facilitated group sessions of the senior people to draw out their view of the business and how the team needed to evolve. This was then followed by individual mentoring sessions that were structured to address the differing view of the individuals and their particular situations.
At first there was significant negativity from some people, but as the programme progressed, this subsided and became positive. The big transition came as they realised that John was not imposing his view of what they should do, but drawing from them what they thought should be done, which was then gradually brought into the general discussion. As the sessions progressed, a collective view started to form and eventually a team spirit.
The company became the largest and most successful company in its business sector. I am sure the mentoring provided by John played a significant part in that."
